I want to import a 1990 Lancia. Like this one. Have I completely lost my marbles? Should I do it?
Answer: I probably have.

any Lancia is a labor of love - it all depends on your level of love and patience. If you can wait weeks or months for parts, sure why not? If you are expecting something you can rock everyday and don't have AAA, then you have lost them marbles!

And as long as I continue to learn Italian (Holy crap, that means I can read and possibly say things in 6 languages including English), then who cares!
I also think it would be far more interesting than a *bah* R32 Skyline... Those might actually work most of the time!

ha yeah, I am trying to equate this to relationships with the ladies, but havent found a good angle yet.
If you have the patience to learn 6 languages, you are probably fine though!

You haven't lost it. However, these cars aren't cheap. Not even in Europe. I know, before Doug decided on the GT-R I was helping him located one in Europe. Expect $20k +-$3k in European purchase alone for a decent one. At $20k you only have the car at the location of the seller, it's excluding shipping, paper work and handling fees of a person/company helping you with the transaction.
To put that in perspective: I can have my slightly tired 1989 BMW 320i (straight six) Touring at a major US east coast port of your choice for $7k or so.

Go for it! I think all of the obvious caveats have been mentioned (long lead time for parts, rust, mechanical issues...etc.). Unfortunately, I am biased as the Lancia Delta is one of my favorites from the 1990s.
If you are willing to deal with the above issues and have a dependable daily driver, you are getting an extremely rare (at least in the states) car, rally pedigree and the last great Lancia (in my opinion). And I think it is absolutely beautiful in the same way that a Stratos, 037 and Urraco are beautiful. I love its sharp edges!
If you don't mind me asking, what are you seeing these go for? (I would assume $45K - $50K, but I only researched a little bit a month or two ago). Finally, is it an Evo ii?

At least finding someone to work the logistics is a bit simpler, as I work in global logistics.
But it's not like finding a cheap 25 year old Ford in the US. I wouldn't expect it to be. I still would like to have something unique like that, even if it means I get to order parts from specialty distributors in Italy at outrageous prices.

Evoluzione cars didn't go into production until late 1991.
Evoluzione II cars didn't go into production until mid 1993.
So this would at best be a Integrale 16v.

Well, if you need help, just ask. I have bought a 25 year old car in Germany and shipped to the US before.
Try http://www.autoscout24.eu and http://www.mobile.de/?lang=en to look for cars in Europe.

$30k for a good 1989-1990 Integrale 16V, including handling and shipping to the US, would be realistic.

Okay...I was looking at Evo ii's when I saw those numbers. Thanks

I'm always willing to at look at and test drive potential cars if they are in Southern Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Northern Italy. You know just as a kind gesture between Jalops. ;)

It's wonderful to know that there are Jalops out there who will do things like this.
Especially for those of the US Jalops who have completely flipped their lids. and want to start figuring out how to buy old Lancias.

In all seriousness, talk to Durtlaang. He is the one who already shipped a car to the US and was trying to find a car for Doug. All I can offer is a thorough inspection and a ton of pics.
BTW I was responsible in Doug not getting an E30 325 iX manual wagon in white with only one old lady owner, considerably low miles (130k kilometers) and an almost perfect service history. Sunroof AND A/C! How rare is that?
The pictures in the ad looked good, but it was a classic case of "good from far but far from good". It had too many "small" spots that needed tending to.
If I can prevent another Jalop from getting the wrong car, I am willing to help. Or maybe this time it's a good one?
